Around SBN: Stan Van Gundy Fired As Head Coach Of The Magic

Ask Niners Nation

Hey everybody, this is Fooch from Niners Nation. This Sunday your Bucs travel to face my 49ers in what is really a big matchup for both teams. You guys are looking to maintain pace in the division and wild card race, while the 49ers need every win they can muster to hang around the NFC West divisional race.

It's been a crazy up and down year for the 49ers and even though they're only 3-6, they're two games out of first in a division that has struggled with consistency to say the least. The 49ers have struggled to consistently win games but suddenly find themselves having won three out of their last four games. Of course that one loss was a hideous loss to Carolina, but we'll just forget about that for now.

The biggest news for the 49ers is the emergence of Troy Smith as the team's starting QB. It remains to be seen how long he'll hold on to the starting role, but for now he's been doing some good things for the 49ers.

Feel free to fire away with questions about the 49ers. I'll also post a link to this at Niners Nation to get some other folks over answering questions. Chatting with the opposition is always one of my favorite aspects of game week.

How will the OL hold up with Staley on the shelf for a few weeks?

As you can always expect come from behind victory is when you least expect it.

we should be ok

Barry sims came in for staley last season and played pretty well. Hopefuly he can do the same now

o-line

As mentioned in the comment above, Barry Sims is filling in and did a good job in a similar role last year. Of course, Sims is a year older and has been inactive most of the season. I hope we’ll see a repeat of last year but it’s hard to tell at this point.

by David Fucillo on Nov 17, 2010 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

Barry Sims will probably be the starter at LT.

And the last time he started for Staley, he played better then Staley. But RT Anthony Davis, the 21 year old rookie is really inconsistent. He’ll look good one game and be beaten like a red-headed stepchild the next.

How has Frank Gore been this year?

Is he having an off year or is he lacking consistency or is it the line? I ask because I haven’t heard much about him.

Also what kind of system does your defense run? For example: Heavy Blitz, man-to-man, or zone.

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

by TheOneInRed on Nov 17, 2010 3:49 PM EST reply actions

Gore

He’s having a very solid year. He’s fifth in the NFL in rushing yards with 778 yards. Among non-QBs he’s 3rd in the NFL in total yards from scrimmage. All in all I’d say that’s not too shabby. He doesn’t get a ton of rushing touchdowns and the team is struggling so talk is generally limited. As good as he is, I would argue that he remains a somewhat under-rated running back around the league in large part because the 49ers haven’t been too good during his career. If the 49ers were 6-3 and he had these numbers we’d hear a lot more about him.

As for the defense, they run a mix of things depending on the situation (obviously). The corners claim to love press coverage but it seems like we see a lot of softer zone coverage, particularly late in games, which has cost the 49ers two games against New Orleans and Atlanta, and almost cost them against the Rams. The team doesn’t blitz a lot even though they find success when they do. It’s a very inconsistent pass rush.

by David Fucillo on Nov 17, 2010 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

Gore is racking up yardage, but not TDs. Though he never was a TD monster.

The Niners run a 3-4, soft-zone Defense that seems to rarely send more then 4 rushers on a play. They’re a good rush defense, but a team can pass all over them, except to TEs who they seem to cover quite well with OLB Manny Lawson leading the charge. They’re also weak against screens.

What I think Bucs’ fans can expect big days from Freeman and the WRs but RBs and TEs being invisible. Unless the RBs and TEs are recieving the screen passes.

gore is a beast

he’s been a really consistant dual threat for us this year, running and receiving. Last game, they started to mix up the runs a little more too. We were all getting tired of everything being up the gut and it was a nice change.

by Andrew9erfan on Nov 17, 2010 4:32 PM EST reply actions

Is Troy Smith the real deal?

Or has he just had two good (really close to great) games? If he is, then I’m really scared for Sunday.

Also, how are your cornerbacks and safeties? In your opinion, are they good enough to deal with Mike Williams, Arrelious Benn and Kellen Winslow?

by K2isawarrior on Nov 17, 2010 4:47 PM EST reply actions

Troy Smith

He had two really solid games. Some folks at NN are ready to lock him up to a contract extension and call it a day. I think he could be the real deal but two games is just not enough to tell for sure. he definitely shows some skills we didn’t see from Alex Smith. One drawback to Troy is that he seems to hold on to the ball for too long and takes some big sacks. Of course, he also has found ways to maneuver out of sacks quite a bit in his two games. Lot of upside at this point.

The 49ers secondary has been incredibly up and down this season. Nate Clements and Shawntae Spencer are the two starting corners, with Dashon Goldson and Taylor Mays starting at free and strong safety. As to Mays, the team has started utilizing Reggie Smith a lot more and at this point he probably plays a bit more at strong safety than mays during a game. Mays has great speed but his awareness is a work in progress.

The 49ers secondary is capable of hanging with your receivers, but they could blown up quite easily. That’s the matchup that probably scares me most.

As for Winslow, I suspect he’ll be covered a fair amount by OLB Manny Lawson. Lawson is incredibly athletic and often is assigned the opposing tight end.

by David Fucillo on Nov 17, 2010 6:06 PM EST up reply actions

i'm not too worried about Kellen Winslow.

the Niners are good against Tight Ends (thanks Manny Lawson).

as for the other two, we may be screwed. Our secondary is probably our biggest weakness (gave up 300 yards to Matt Moore), and our pass rush isn’t beastly enough to make up for it.

In fact, feel free to expect a career day from Josh Freeman. You aren’t being overly-optimistic.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

How do you see the Niners defensive matchup vs Bucs offense

which will give your team bigger problems: the running game with Blount or the passing game with Williams/K2/Benn?

The 2010 Bucs: Considering their two-minute offense works wonders... Why can't EVERY offensive drive be run like that during the other 58 minutes of the damn game?!

by witty on Nov 17, 2010 4:54 PM EST reply actions

passing game

I am comfortable with the 49ers rushing defense, not so much the passing defense (mentioned above and below). I think the team can contain Blount, but the secondary needs to step up

by David Fucillo on Nov 17, 2010 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

What is the Niner's strength on defense?

Willis and TKO Spikes get a lot of press but other than him I’m not sure I know a thing about another starter.

5 picks out of the first 100 in a draft saturated with talent. Yes, I'm optimistic.

by chuckyforpres on Nov 17, 2010 5:52 PM EST reply actions

defense

The 49er strength is against the run. They do struggle against faster running backs but for the most part they’re very solid against the run. Willis and Spikes are a big reason for that, but CBs Nate Clements and Shawntae Spencer are strong in run coverage on the outside. The secondary has its share of struggles in the passing game and the pass rush is inconsistent.

by David Fucillo on Nov 17, 2010 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

The secondary has been a bit dissappointing this year. Safety Dashon Goldson showed a lot of promise last year and was supposed to emerge as a leader on the 49ers defense. He’s been very inconsistent this year. Michael Lewis was the other starting safety this year but was released after internal strife with the organization. Reggie Smith and rookie Taylor Mays have both been seeing playing time, but neither has solidified a starting roll. Teams have taken advantage of the aggressiveness of Shawntae Spencer and Nate Clements. They’ve played well for the most part this season, but the lack of a consistent pass rush has negated their aggressive play.

by JSing on Nov 17, 2010 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

But god help the Niners if the game comes down to a game winning drive.

The 49ers 2 minute defense has been startlingly bad…. Lots of soft zones and playing the “prevent” defense that lets opponents march straight down the field to score for the win.

Most of us at NN take it for granted that the 49ers D will let the opponents score on the last drive.

How do you guys feel about Singletary?

There was a point this season where I thought he’d screwed up, lost the team and was making rash, panicky decisions (like firing his OC). I don’t know if my vision of him is correct, though.

by Sander on Nov 17, 2010 7:26 PM EST reply actions

Firing Jimmy Raye was the right answer. However, firing him 15 hours after giving him the dreaded “vote of confidence” was not. I think Singletary is widely resented amongst the players. I think the team has had a very positive reaction to Mike Johnson (the new O.C.) and Troy Smith. I believe the team is playing despite Singletary, not for him.

by JSing on Nov 17, 2010 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

widely resented?

If he was widely resented I think this team would have quit on him a long time ago. Given how much turmoil there has been I think it’s not even remotely resentment.

by David Fucillo on Nov 17, 2010 8:25 PM EST up reply actions

Resented?

Sorry Bucs fans, this is not the consensus around the 49ers at all.

The team is playing hard, and very well could have won 3 games they lost this year were it not for a few crucial mistakes.

To say Sing is widely resented seems rather baseless and empty to me.

by brundylop on Nov 17, 2010 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

For the record though

I am convinced he needs to be fired for the team to succeed.

Most of us, including me, were raving over him last season… then this season happened, and I think his inexperience/shortcomings have been sharply exposed.

by brundylop on Nov 17, 2010 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

Not all players

I would disagree with J Sing. When Staley went down last week, he choose to come back into the game hurt. That tells me that he is playing for his other teammates, and his coach. I think the media and the fans have really turned up the heat on him. I think most of the players still are buying in. However, I do believe that he will be relieved at the end of the season. He is much more of a motivator than an actual coach.

by Blowfish on Nov 17, 2010 8:23 PM EST up reply actions

staley went down with a broken leg

and played the rest of the game

Kellen Moore is awesome

by manraj7 on Nov 17, 2010 10:54 PM EST up reply actions

Just a few more plays

His leg was hurt no question. He got an x-ray that showed no break, so he cowboy’d up and went back in with the hurt leg.

Took another kick to the leg and knew it was broken then, could feel the bone moving around some. Played a couple more plays and then came out for good.

but firing his OC wasn’t a rash and panicky decision. it was a deciasion that should have been made before the season even started.

My roommate is a 49er fan

And i watched Troy Smith play…and to be honest i wasn’t too impressed. He’s had a nice game, but with Tilb shutting down Crabtree, and our Lbers all over V.Davis i believe Smith will be under pressure a lot, esp. with 2 rookies starting on the line. Gore is a beast I do give him that, but i have been forced to watch 49er games and i think this one wont be close, Bucs win by at least 10

by shadowchicken on Nov 17, 2010 9:54 PM EST reply actions

Your LB's can't keep up with our TE's man to man, that would end pretty quickly.

It has to zone to stop our TE’s and Crabtree got a couple catches on Asomugah, so i hope Talib is better, to back up that statement. Does Talib play both sides of the field and match up to the best WR on every down? How is your next CB? and what about your safeties, speed wise? In man to man, your LB’s are toast vs our starting TE’s…..

by rlott#42 on Nov 17, 2010 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

I think our LB's will be a pretty good match up man to man with your TE's.

Our scheme requires fast LB’s and Geno Hayes along with Quincy Black are really fast. I would give the nod to your TE’s though. Black looks like he’ll miss this game which means our rookie LB Watson will get his 2nd start this Sunday.

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

by TheOneInRed on Nov 18, 2010 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

Except for one thing...

Rhonde Barber will most likely be covering your best TE…and he’s played really well in pass coverage/run support these last two weeks.

by LABucsFan on Nov 18, 2010 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely will be Ronde.

He moves inside and jams and covers the TE. He also can make audilbes there for blitzes. I’ve seen him move inside on 1WR and 3WR sets.

by chuckyforpres on Nov 18, 2010 6:44 PM EST up reply actions

Vernon Davis runs a 4.38

and Delanie Walker isn’t too far behind. I find it hard to believe that there are many LBs that can keep up with them.

by Ikaros on Nov 17, 2010 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think many LB’s can keep up with our TE’s, I would go as far to say that Willis and Lawson are 2 of those LB’s

by ro128487 on Nov 17, 2010 11:24 PM EST up reply actions

I love our LBs

Especially Patrick Willis. He’s one of the few that would be able to cover Vernon Davis man to man. Good thing they’re on the same team.

by Ikaros on Nov 17, 2010 11:38 PM EST up reply actions

Our LB's can keep up with him.

I doubt they will be able to maintain position on him. Davis does a great job of making his cuts and getting in the air for the ball while moving the defender with his body. I expect he’ll be first on the defense’s list during passing downs.

5 picks out of the first 100 in a draft saturated with talent. Yes, I'm optimistic.

by chuckyforpres on Nov 18, 2010 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

yeah VD or Delanie Walker, pick your poison

both run faster than a lot of WR’s and are too big for a DB to cover. They’re on the field at the same time too. Crabtree is a good route runner and has great hands. He’s not going to burn you if you’re thinking that a speedy Talib just has to take the deep threat away. Plus we use a variety of screens, bubbles, slants, and crossing routes. Troy has been finding whomever is open, or even close to open, so keying on one player wont work.

Imagine if there were even half the penalties...plot to keep score close?! ;-)

by Tre9er on Nov 18, 2010 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

Both teams match up quite nicely

We have a horrible pass defense which the Bucs will be able to exploit and your rush defense is gonna have a tough time with Frank Gore. I’m gonna give it to my Niners simply because it’s a home game.

by Ikaros on Nov 17, 2010 11:41 PM EST up reply actions

Reading some comments on NN

it seems like your TE’s are very highly valued. Looking at Football Outsiders and other stats they seem to be productive as well.

Would you say that the Niners offense is highly dependent on your TE’s being effective? Do they operate like a TE in a traditional offense? How good are they at blocking?

by Sam Joxer on Nov 18, 2010 12:43 AM EST reply actions

Most important part of the offense

has got to be Frank Gore. When he gets it going, everything else works for them. The reason they were so successful scoring in the Saints game was because Frank was able to run so well, letting the 49ers pass better.

Now that Jimmy Raye is gone and Troy Smith seems to be airing it out (albeit vs crappy defenses), we’ll see how that changes.

I’m going to say that Vernon Davis is the best TE in the league. He’s one of the best blockers out there, and when Mike Martz was the OC, Vernon was mainly used as a blocker, and did a damn good job. It turns out he’s also a freak on the receiving side, although his hands used to be a problem (he used to drop some passes… this year he hasn’t been thrown to that much.)

Delanie is also a very good receiving threat, although his blocking is nowhere near VD’s.

by brundylop on Nov 18, 2010 1:27 AM EST up reply actions

not used like traditional TE's in the passing game

way too athletic for that. Split wide (Y-Flex) mostly but they do in-line block (VD is one of the best blockers at TE in the league) and also release from the end of the line in a tradtional sense, though they run more vertical routes than most TE’s

Imagine if there were even half the penalties...plot to keep score close?! ;-)
Nitwitter

by Tre9er on Nov 18, 2010 1:59 PM EST up reply actions

The Niners offense

relies heavily on the TEs. Vernon Davis excels at both blocking and receiving (this is the reason he was selected to start at the pro bowl last year), Delanie Walker is more of a WR type, and Nate Byham is a blocker with decent hands but is kinda slow. Byham is sometimes plugged in at FB and many believe he should take over at that position in place of Moran Norris.

to stop the 49ers nowadays

if the STL game holds true in terms of receivers finding ways to get open and Troy spreading it around…I’d focus on the run game first but in passing situations you need to bring pressure from multiple places so Troy can’t step up or flee the pocket. If he rolls out, roll coverage to that side and make him throw it back across the field for dangerous passes.

Imagine if there were even half the penalties...plot to keep score close?! ;-)

These 49er(3-6) fans are some cocky, arrogant fans that think their team is unstoppable. Hope we knock Troy Smith’s dick in the dirt just to shut ’em up.

Its one thing to talk a lil smack and gloat

Its another thing to be straight rude about it, to the point where I don’t even want to post and talk about the teams. There’s other ways to get your point across. Your right though that it does happen, some fan bases are better than others at being respectful win or lose. Maybe I’m just old fashioned.
