The Sinking Ship
With the draft just around the corner, I thought I’d finally bleed my soul again for those “Pewter Pirates.” Without a doubt, it’s been one tumultuous season for both players and fans alike. It’s almost ironic that the Buccaneers had sailed into one hell of a storm. A season ago, I came to you all speaking high and hopeful for the 2009 season. Alas, I was truly unaware as to how bad the situation was in Tampa; so much so, that I began cursing Raheem and his dream. I had relapsed into the fan I was back in the 2006 season, when the Buccaneers suffered a dismal 4 – 12 record. Back then, watching those Seahawks, I was almost ready to turncoat and switch teams. But I was held back, something inside me felt like I was betraying the Bucs, my favorite team since 1997.
Like I said, the season hasn’t been easy, but everything changed when number 5 ran gallantly into the Raymond James Stadium on Week 9. It was if the candle of fandom had reignited. I watched on the NFL.com highlights reel as he made mincemeat of one of toughest teams in the NFL. Even though it wasn’t live, I still cheered like it was. I shouted for joy as Kellen Winslow Jr. made a seemingly impossible catch. I was proud, like many, to be a Buccaneers fan that day. From that moment on, I could only build my fan foundations even stronger.
This is a wonderful site. I frequent this, along with Buccaneers.com and Tampa Bay Online. While Tampa Bay Online is informative, they lack the heart that this fan site has. Their news, for the most part, has been mostly disheartening. Here, I read the words of those who have as much, if not more, hope as I do. This season, I learned what it is to be atrue fan.
This past season, our Buccaneers were like a sinking ship. Amidst this horrendous squall, the words “mutiny” and “abandon ship” has crossed many a troubled fan’s minds. While the risk of mutiny is no longer an issue, many have already taken it upon themselves and jumped ship. They hope to find a new ship to take arms with, becoming Raiders. But those pirates made a deal with the devil, and are under a captain who’s long past overdue. Maybe they just want to find land and become a Patriot of some land they don’t even know. Possibly. But maybe they’ve forgotten why they became a Buccaneer in the first place.
Before I, there were those who heeded to the call. It was a dream, establishing on the east coast of the United States. Sure, at first, the dream was a laughing stock. Many spoke of the little bounty to be had with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But through time and patience, they built themselves into one of the most feared teams in the NFL. However, like all good things, such a dream would have to eventually fade. The crew of the ship was getting old, no longer to carry the load expected to keep the ship afloat. Enter Raheem Morris, a man who stunned many with his actions. And here we are, aboard what many call a sinking ship, but I say we’re far from that.
A patch up here, nail a wooden plank there, and we’ll be ready in no time. Every fan is bound to hit their hard times with their respective teams. Patriots fans had to endure many unsuccessful seasons before Bill Belichick and Tom Brady made their appearance. I will continue to read up on the wealth of information to be had here. And if you ever need a reason to solidify your fandom for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, look no further. This here is a fine band of writers, speaking with both facts and spirit. There is a bright horizon to look forward to. I trust this Captain. I trust this charted course. I like where this is headed...
I may live in San Francisco, but I bleed pewter. I’m eagerly waiting to buy my tickets for the Bucs at 49ers game this 2010 season. Amidst a sea of loud, rambunctious, proud 49ers fans, I will be there, standing tall. I’m a Bucs fan, who are you?

I do have to say something,
A true Buc fan, scratch that, any team fan would not be thinking about jumping ship because of 1 bad season. Shoot, the Bucs could have the same record for the next 2 years and I still would falter away from them.
Edit
Still would not falter from them*

STAY TRUE
I do not care if the Bucs Higher the Waterboy to be the coach… and we tied the Detroit Lions with a 0 win season… I will alwas be a Bucs fan… Growing up I was a Cowboys fan until I turned 15 which was 1996 and have been a BUCS fan ever since
Nice read
Ner’ been a ship that sailed the seven seas that didn’t see a storm now and again. I’m an 0-26 survivor and have seen it all. This is a process that happens to every team. The good teams, front office and coaching, can right the ship in a few years. The bad ones are found out and make changes or sink. I too think the Bucs are on a good coarse and will improve next year. But if they don’t, I will not jump ship. I might drink a few more tankards of Ale and curse at the tv. But I am a Bucs fan and can take the stormy weather. GO BUCS!!
I will never jump ship...
… but why sink when we don’t have to. Too many Bucs fans are content with struggling. I am tired of the losing ways. I can’t wait for the end of next season, when the trigger will finally be pulled and our interim lame duck staff will probably be purged for something much bigger and brighter.
Cracker ball is tired of the losing ways...all one year of them...
so crackerball wants us to suck next year so we can fire our coach. thats nice.
lucky we have cracker ball to chart the course for the ship for us huh?
sorry CB, I get the feeling the Bucs are going to win next year, and you my friend are not going to be allowed off the hook so easy with your mutiny. Charges will be brought by all!!! (damn that pirate stuff is catchy)

I wish this were the ONLY losing season I had to endure...
Just because you have a warm fuzzy feeling, doesn’t make it so. But, we will see.
If we finish 9-7 or better, I will apologize profusely to you. Anything less is backwards from the “Hey Gruden, you’re fired” era. Hell, I will even fly down there and take you to yours to dinner anywhere you’d like to go. I obviously do not share your unbridled enthusiasm for the upcoming season. Do you think the Bucs will go 9-7, Niko? Maybe 6-10? That would mean it only took 2 seasons to match Gruden last season here. We may not even do that.
Just for the record, I DO NOT want us to suck – but we probably will. I did see Detroit and St. Louis on the upcoming schedule, so that is something.
I am simply saying – If it walks like a duck… well, you know the rest.

I don't know how long you've been reading these boards Cracker, but before the Seattle game there were only a few wanting to keep Morris, Niko being one.
He’s never changed his mind, nor have I, the opposition to Morris. I knew in the second half of the Seattle game people were switching sides, any glimmer of hope will do that. I had the feeling we’d beat New Orleans too and it’s even gotten worse, people on TBO threw some support for Morris, which is unheard of.
Look, I do not want Morris to fail, I want to win every single game and nobody has ever seen me write that I want to lose or I hope we lose, or anything like that. I just don’t feel that Morris is or was ready to be the head coach of any football team, and I wish Denver would have hired him but was only interviewing him for the stupid Rooney Rule. So some say if we fire him, then we have to go through 2 more years of losing. well what happens when he does get fired for losing again next year? I don’t even think we would lose with a new coach, the people in Baltimore aren’t complaining about their new coach losing, shoot, they could make another serious run this year too.
I just think he was the wrong person for the job, just like Bates, Jags, Leftwich, and Clayton. I’m sure there will be more questionable moves to come too. I just want to win.
I now completely understand the term "Gooberville"
Who cares about who said it first
Until we one that first game and saw JF show some promise I wasnt against Morris, but I sure was waiting for something for me to not be against him. Before the season started I thought he would be a great coach since hes assistant of Monte, then as the season went on I began to wonder, now I am content with another year or two.
Point is, I look for progress or lack or progress to determine my thoughts. There are some who just make a decision and stick with it no matter if the results, theres no changing thier mind. Lets not worry about being the guy who said it first.

A winning team is all I want for us... all of us.
… whoever is at the helm. I just hated the fact that Gruden was let go in the first place. When they hired Morris, who had just been promoted to the DC position, but had never really proven himself at that level, I knew we were in for a long season.
I just figured the Glazers were trying to maintain status quo as best as possible, kinda cheap out for a season, and knew he would not be able to change our game very much because of his inexperience. I never expected to fall from 9-7 to 3-13. That very collapse is where my fiery demeanor and sarcasm comes from.
I believe if they would have retained just 3 of the players let go (Garcia, Brooks and June) we could have been a more competitive team and Freemen could have had a crafty veteran to teach him the ins and outs for another season, or maybe two. What has he learned from Byron Leftwich? Only how to overthrow his receivers and hang on to the ball too long.
One can only hope that the Glazers are more clever than I feel right now, and taht the reach for Cowher will happen, just a year from now. Let him gather up his staff in the meantime.

Uhh, let's see
1) Garcia SUCKS- Sorry, but he was injured and old, along with i can’t throw a deep ball.
2) Brooks is working for the cursed four letter network. That means that A) No one has interest in him B) If they had interest, Why wouldn’t they sign him? C) He’s Old D) His skills regressed to the mean last year.
3) June- Broken forearm- Picked up, then cut- Then picked up (FAIL)
Desean Jackson is one hell of a guy.
Buc'em- Your source for everything buccaneer.
So Byron Leftwich is an improvement?
I can’t see how that could be true. As for Brooks, who cares if anyone else signed him. His value to US is his complete knowledge of OUR system. Its like having a coach right on the field. The fact that no one else signed him is pretty irrelevant. Plus, an older Derrick Brooks is still probably better than most.

About Byron:
Yes and No- If you want someone to coach JF, then yes- I don’t agree with the Byron Signing. I also don’t agree with wasting our time between Luke/Lefty battle.
However, here’s a list of good things:
A) The team got younger- Lefty is what 28/29. That’s a significant gain over Garcia’s almost semi-retired age.
B) Garcia would have missed half the season already- He’s 39, he was hurt for like 5 games last year and would have taken away some/most snaps from JF. Not too mention, if he starts gets hurt, then starts, again gets hurt. What’s the point?
C) He can’t throw as well as he used to at his young age- No really, Last season was the best season he had in like 9 years for a collective yardage of 2,712 yards. Did i mention that Lefty in 3 games got about 20% of that? Over a whole year, that’s about 3,000 yards right there. (Note*- Not accounting for X-Factors).
Desean Jackson is one hell of a guy.

Garcias strength is what between his ears...
I don’t think Garcia ever had a cannon for an arm – like Leftwich does. But he manages to do more with less. Garcia is cut from the same mold as his SF predecessors – Montana and Steve Young. Kinda weak armed but filled with plenty of smarts. He was drafted and taught by Bill Walsh and learned on the sidelines from Young. Thats not bad at all, and would have much to share with Josh Freeman.
Could you imagine Freemans arm with Garcias savvy and smarts?
I’m just sayin…

Savy smart veteran QB's dont come cheap
Especially if his specific duty is to teach a young QB about the league. Why not just hire him as a QB coach…isnt what they are for?
"I meant to misspell that word, just observing who would correct me."
I agree with this
Every one wants to complain with what we let go, however no one else in football wanted them.
Whats that tell you?
Yes tough times suck but things will get better. We have a cake schedule next year with games like Clev, St Louis, Detroit, Wash and Seattle. Thats 5 wins. Then games against teams like Arizona (with no Warner), San Fransisco and Cinncinati which we really will have a chance in. This year with a bad team we gave Carolina and Atlanta a run for their money twice each. We even found away to beat New Oreleans once so you never know what will happen.
There is a good chance this team can win 8 games, which was an improvment and progress.
Just give it time and roll with it. Stop being so negative.
Really our lives are the same wether they win or lose.
QB COACH
I agree I actually like BOTH Josh’s and no I’m not Joshing you lol just had to say it… I think if we got a good OC and QB Coach we c an bring both along to even have good competetion every year in training camp any maybe be able to use them both effectively we can admit that JJ is FAST and JF is very sturdy and mobile… I think if the BUCS put as much time into these 2 as they did wasted on Leftwich and McCown during the off season they will make a great QB and back up but both be able to puch each other to be better

Beware of "cake" schedules...
I see Detroit and St. Louis. I am not even sure Detroit will be cake. Cleveland, Washington and Seattle will not be some kind of “gimmee” games, like you predict. San Francisco and Cincinnati will be difficult, along with the rest of our schedule.
I have my fears that next years results may not look very different than this year. It has been quite a while since we have been this feeble. To come up with more wins here, there had better be some real improvement made in the off season, personnel-wise.
Teen spirit is great and all, but we do suck, and really need some major revamping – all over the place.

Its Spilt Milk
I am not saying I agree or disagree but crying about moves made before last season is like me crying about the Bert Emanual catch. Sure we might of ended up in our first superbowl then, but they fixed the rule, and theres nothing anyone can do just like now, nothing you can do except hope this team can be fixed.
To be honest all those firings were a bold movement saying lets fix this team that hasnt done anything since 02’.
"I meant to misspell that word, just observing who would correct me."
I am also a Buc fan in the Bay Area of the west!
I go out to the local bar with my Alstott jersey every single sunday mornin at 10 am.
I do not miss a game. I have loved this team sine 88 when I was 6.
I have never missed a game when they come to the ‘stick. (I won’t go to Oakland, that place is a shit hole)
I rocked Buc’o Bruce, and was made fun of.
I will never jump ship, cause no matter how bad it gets, it will never be as bad as it was.
Dungy, Gruden, Morris or who ever is next, I will root for them. It doesn’t matter who plays for this team or who coaches or owns them, I love the team.
Players, coaches and owners come and go.
We the fans are forever!!!!
