Start Josh Freeman
After the dismissal of Gruden and Allen, I thought the flaws of this team would be erased if not improved. The extra cap space used on aging vets, the talent evaluation in the draft, and the west coast offense that never truly evolved. I felt this year's draft would be used to add depth to a declining defense. Instead of picking Peria Jerry to stuff the run i.e. Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams or Vontae Davis to replace Barber, Raheem picked Freeman. The concerns of his lack of footwork and success at K-State don't bother me, considering he was the only Wildcat taken and was backed by the worst defense in the Big-12. I am impressed and optomistic with his potential to give us our first 20 TD QB since Brad Johnson. If you are going to replace Jeff Garcia's 64.9 pass % with Journeymen who haven't proved to be able to solve this team's red zone woes, why wouldn't you start the player you traded up for when you could have had a possible shot at Tebow or Bradford next year? If Jags plans on a run heavy offense, why not get his feet wet? Experiment with new toys like Winslow who can't be covered by any linebacker, and this o-line that I would take over Pittsburgh and N.Y. any day. If healthy Ward and Graham will combine for at least 1,800 yds. If you continue a bold trend such as a first round QB, follow through and hope for this year's Matt Ryan or Big Ben. Don't think about it, just do it!

it's probably not the popular stance
but i’m with you guys completely. I’m sick of the stop gaps and ready to get behind the building block of our future in Josh Freeman. With that said, I’ll support whichever route Raheem and company decide in terms of Freeman’s career and long term development…
Despite all of the drastic changes this off-season this is an intensely exciting time for this franchise and fan base.
Buc 'Em Your SBNation Tampa Bay Bucs Blog where Dull Boys are not allowed!!
Ehhh
Tough stuff man, we just signed McCown, and brought in Leftwitch. BUT i am big a Buc fan, to actually give up a year (if we have to) to get our stuff together. Sticking Freeman in there (in my opinion) would be great. McCown and Leftwitch to me are nothing but younger journeymen. Josh Johnson could be used in wildcat?…
Whatever the choices, we as fans gotta stick by it, and support them on the field.
Go Bucs!!!!
I kind of agree
i wish we could just throw him in and he would do really good. but i think either luke or byron could easily throw 20 td’s in the new system with the offensive coordinator…i jsut hope if freeman does start that he doesnt end up like leaf
i wouldn't start him
Simply because of the whole David Carr experiment. I know we have more weapons, a better O-line and a Better D. But how many Rookie QBs are pushed into a starting Gig and end up getting beat up, and end up like Joey Harrington. I like what Cincy did (1 of the few things they do right) bench their Future QB for a season, and now Palmer is almost an all-star. Sit Freeman, and let someone else take the lumps, let K2 run the wrong routs when someone else is throwing to him, let Ward miss a block when some one else is dropping back. Let all of the new weapons learn the playbook, and hopefully next season, Freeman can step in, and be the starter from day 1. We will still have all of our weapons (who would have more experience with our playbook) and Freeman and Co will all be on the same page. And hopefully with our crazy cap room we add some more weapons on D.
As much as I like
this discussion, I am one of the first to say that this is seriously getting old. I just want to wait for the preseason to come. Please NFL, MOAR FOOTBALL PLEASE. Us football fans, are getting bored.
We need Robots....The time is now Bud.
If this guy is a farnchise QB
then what’s the rush? We arent a Super Bowl team this coming year so why rush his development and throw him out there too early? Give him time to adapt and amture. Let McCown/Leftiwch start the year, and as Freeman becomes comfortable and we feel he can handle it, then put him out there.
There isnt much to gain by putting him in front of the firing squad. If he truly is our guy for years to come, then lets make sure he’s ready. For every Peyton Manning (who started game 1) there are 100 Ryan Leafs. Brady, Palmer, Brees, Rivers etc all sat their first year (or more)
I say start him
Freeman is going to be stacked behind a heavy running attack this season with speedy receivers that can get open deep. He has the size to be a successful NFL QB and getting knocked around a bit isn’t going to be enough to ruin his career. The Falcon’s success last season came because of a killer running attack that took a lot of pressure off of Matt Ryan. You all definitely have the pieces in place to duplicate that style of success.
know what you believe in and why you believe in it
no.
Freeman is an extremely raw prospect. he’s going to have to come out during the preseason and walk on water before getting a chance to start. throwing him into the fire too early can, and probably will, turn him into Carr v2.0

"start Freeman"
What a JOKE! Carson Palmer sat David Carr Started; Risk Mirer was a rookie who started at QB, Drew Brees sat. The list goes on and on; There are only a hand full of Successful rookie QBs; And those QB, (Flacco, Ryan) are a hell of a lot more polished than our Freeman. Freeman sits for a season then plays, so what if we have a bad season, so that means we pick up a big time DT or OLB or OL; And then Freeman will be ready, he will know the playbook, the WR would know the playbook (which means they will run the right routs); the OL will have a whole season under their belt working with the new “zone blocking” we are bringing in. Look, we don’t gain anything by letting a Rookie start, but if he sits, then someone else takes the Lumps, of a new offence, while Freeman’s footwork, and mechanics improve. He can focus on learning rather than trying to improve his game while looking thinking how to beating that team on sunday….
I say go for it .
Let’s limit the playbook [passing] and run the hell out of the ball and have him pass as needed and let him get some hands on learning . Keep the passes 5-10 yards , when he’s needed to pass , and pass long when needed to keep the defense honest . With our RB’s and our awesome o-line , he won’t need to be perfect . And as he learns , you can expand the playbook and our offense will become just that more dangerous .
That dog don't hunt
David Carr this, David Carr that…his rookie season he got sacked 76 times! While having his blind spot guarded by the oft injured Tony Boselli and Dom Caper’s running scheme was not effective. We have an O-Line! We have a running scheme! Freeman has the pocket poise to throw over the middle which is just what this team needs. If you want Leftwich’s lack of clutch and McCown’s resume that’s your opinion and I more than respect it. What I am emphasising is that we no longer have Chucky’s erubix cube offense with his my way or the highway mentality, if we did I would agree with you. Jag’s offense will play to Freeman’s strengths like naked bootlegs and actually hitting Bryant over 40 yds. “So what if we have a bad season”?! You should start rooting for the Lions. If we were to get a big time defender this year’s draft would have been the time and next year we could have gotten a polished senior quarterback Tebow,Bradford,Snead with a losing season you are implying. We are not in that situation and Morris and Dominik gambeled big time and now is the time to put that physical youth movement they’ve engineered on the field…and nobody, NOBODY fits the role (that I can see) like Freeman. Olson, Jags, and Raheem are working tempestuously to get him ready to compete with 3 other teams in our division led by quarterbacks who passed for over 3,000 yds, one of those who passed for over 5,000. As much as taking the lumps would obey the ebbs and flows, I want us to succeed and I don’t see that happening with Leftwich and McCown. Freeman has proven his leadership skills and resiliance at K-State…this year he’ll prove it in Tampa. God do I sound like Deumig!
If we would ‘ve waited til next year to a qb , I’d definitely draft Bradford or Snead . Tebow seems like he’d make a better rb than a qb , of course , I’m a Seminole fan .

Actually
Tebow loooks more like a linebacker
We need Robots....The time is now Bud, Stern, and Goodell.
Seriously, Officiating Sucks in this Country
ACTUALLY OR....
I was thinking that also . He’d also make one hell of hard-hitting strong-safety . I’ve seen him knock over a few of our guys being a ‘noles fan , and I wouldn’t want to get hit by him .

LUKE MCCOWN
Because in 3 years Our young rookie will be only 25.
You guys will be forgetting about freeman this year if Luke has the year I think he will have.
BucStop.com a new blog for Bucs Fans <
Where else would you stop for everything Buccaneers?
I agree 100%
With niko521bucs… If Luke doesn’t get robbed of his opportunity by the seemingly favoritism bias Coach, Then he will start and I think that their is some great things he has the ability to do to put the Bucs in the win column. In my opinion, out of all that I have seen, heard and read about The bucs QBs, with Luke as the starter The Bucs will probably at the least have an 8-8 season. Leftwich- maybe 5 to 6 wins and most of those will come after he gets hurt (Leftwich has never played a full 16 game season).
Freeman- well unless somehow all the planets and stars align perfectly during each and every game then maybe 2 or 3 wins if that. Just because he is the coaches “Buddy” doesn’t make him another Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco. The odds are more in favor of him being more like a Ryan Leaf.
