PETITION TO START JOSH JOHNSON!!!

The buccaneers need to start in a new direction. They already got rid of Gruden, Brooks, and Dunn, so they need to completely change. I think Josh Johnson is the answer. He is young, agile, fast, quick, has a great arm, and has a chance to grow up with this team. We have seen Luke play before, and he is an average qb. What we need is someone young and energetic who will make the dirty and tough plays at the end of the game.

I really wish JOhnson would get more attention during practices, and I hope the coach puts him in. Anyone else feel the same?

QB Competition

What do you mean more attention in practice? Last I heard they got equal reps in order to compete for the starting job.

Football fans are hillarious...

I remember a couple years ago when fans were crying for Gradkowski to be the starter. Young QB’s need time to develop, if we were to just hand the starters job to Johnson, I think it would seriously damange his growth.

Besides, what do we really now about Johnson. Lets watch him in the preseason, and see how he fairs with pro D’s. McCown deserves the chance now, we as fans should be patient with him.

exxtremm is right....

People are so ready to give the leadership role to a guy that they have never seen through a pass in a real NFL game. That really boggles my mind how anyone can just decide to give such an incredible amount of responsability to the least experienced. With the right coaching, the right scheme and the opportunity, which until now McCown hasn’t had, He can not rightly be judged. If Johnson were to start and McCown some how got traded and Johnson bombed and McCown took the other team to a playoff then you would have to deal with such regrets. That is what the coaches are not going to let happen in my opinion. Josh is young and he will still be their. McCown has been their for some time and it is now time for them to see if he is worth keeping or what his value to the Buccs really is and the only way to do that is to give him the opportunity to see how he shows his potential. Gradkowski is the best and most recent example of this situation. Because of his college stats and abilities everyone wanted him to be the starter and then when he was everyone could not wait to see him go. If they throw Johnson in to soon, it is a much greater chance history will repeat itself and he will be a bust.
I feel that McCown has put up with a lot of junk like this for quite some time and he has rightfully earned his chance at becoming a starter. If nothing else, he has shown he can sustain through adversity and that is a great quality for a QB that can not be taught and very few QBs have.

I like mccown but he hasnt proved he should be the starter. The bucs just dont have anyone else. He has never bee na great quarter who would take a team to the playoffs. I am not saying he cant, but the only reason he might be the starter is because they are tired of giving Griese a chance.

by ClipperMyth on Apr 6, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Josh sure hasn't...

True BUT Johnson sure hasn’t proved anything himself. I would rather the Buccs sign Grossman (who has been to a super bowl with the Bear) before just throwing all causion to the wind and give the starting position to a complete unknown and from one of the smaller college ranks no less. If it were that easy to be an NFL QB, their would not be so many past 1st rounders that became instant starters and became a bust. Many of those 1st rounders came from big colleges and played in hugh games but for whatever reason could not hang in the NFL so why should anyone believe that a small time QB lacking hugh game play time could be successful right away at leading an NFL team.
Johnson lacking experience in big games is what should be the reason why he should be tested at an even greater level to prove himself before just handing him the position because of favortism over McCown. That is all I am trying to say.

Gradkowski was on a Bucs team that had no talent on offense. This is a different team with different coaches. IT would be easy to compare the two QB’s but they are completely different.

by ClipperMyth on Apr 6, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Like all Bucs fans, I want a franchise QB.

I thought Simms would be it, I crossed my fingers with Gradkowski. They weren’t ready. I am excited to see what McCown can do. He has been with this organization for a long time. He has great athletic ability and has had plenty of time watching film. We have put in the work to develop him, the least we should do is give him an opportunity.

The plus side is we are DEVELOPING another QB . I like the team the Bucs have with a young starter, a project, and a veteran. I wish the Bucs would upgrade Griese, but he can win you games.

"Open-competition"

I petition to let the best QB win the job…Johnson, McCown and the rookie(whoever that may me)

by Starbucs32 on Apr 6, 2009 4:27 PM EDT reply actions

I completely agree

But im still hoping for Johnson to pull through.

by dannythegreat on Apr 6, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

JJ all the way.

I think that josh johnson should start, but if he doesn’t do as good as Mccown in the Competition then of course Mccown should start. i really like them both.

the only thing bothering me is if they Draft a QB, Which i wouldn’t mind Josh Freeman if they do but us picking up a new QB that they plan on starting just slims JJ and LM chances of playing.

QB Quandary

Our offensive line has matured since the last time McCown started not to mention the coaching staff has changed as well. He may fit in to the scheme at this point but I feel that he is an average QB. I do not know much about Johnson so I am not going to comment on him. It should be an interesting preseason both should be allowed equal time and simply see who is better. I do not know about the rest of you but I would rather them wait on drafting a QB in the 2010 class. Seems like there would be more and possibly better options then.

damnit

just let JJ earn the spot. I’d feel a hell of a lot better knowing that JJ beat out McCown to start. Why just throw JJ in when he’s not good enough to beat out McCown? Once he Beats him out he deserves it but until then, the best QB plays…end of story

solution

I agree that they should give McCown a chance, but why draft a QB when you don’t know about McCown or Johnson? Shouldn’t our picks should go toward defense and WR? Let them compete and then assign them 1 and 2.

if they draft a QB

i think it says ALOT about the QB’s currently on the roster. Meaning it didnt take much time to realize they arent NFL quality, which would be a harsh reality. If they draft a QB i hope it’s in the first round, anything less would be a waste
