Our First NFL Mock Draft: Let's get into it!

Alright we have out first Mock Draft Request to fulfill, the guys over at Next Season Sports are running a Mock Draft amongst the blogosphere and you need to be a part of it. Think of this as the first prelude to helping the Bucs make that Draft day decision and as a warm up to the SBNation network-wide Mock Draft that will be under way shortly. Here's the picks from Next Season Sports so far:

  • 1. Lions – Michael Johnson (DE) Georgia Tech - Detroit Lions Blog
  • 2. Rams - Michael Crabtree (WR) Texas Tech - St. Louis Ram Fan
  • 3. Chiefs - Matt Stafford (QB) Georgia - Chiefs Blog
  • 4. Seahawks - Andre Smith (OT) Alabama - Seahawks Draft Blog
  • 5. Browns - Aaron Curry (LB) Wake Forest - Cleveland Browns Weblog
  • 6. Bengals – Michael Oher (OT) Mississippi - Who Dey Fans
  • 7. Raiders – Rey Maualuga (LB) USC - Oakland-Raiders
  • 8. Jaguars - Eugene Monroe (LT) Virginia - Big Cat Country
  • 9. Packers - Brian Cushing (LB) USC - Packer Backer Blog

  • 12. Broncos - James Laurinaitis (ILB) Ohio State - Orange Bucksnorts
  • 13. Redskins - Brian Orakpo (DE) Texas - Redskins Blog
  • ...UPDATE... So much for the Defensive Ends, yikes. I like Laurinaitis for the Broncos as well. Six picks away!!! Who's laughing about that #1 pick? And who's crying about Raji being picked so early? There's some noticeable names that have slid thus far: QB Mark Sanchez USC DE Brian Orakpo Texas DE Everette Brown FSU CB Vontae Davis Illinois CB Malcolm Jenkins Ohio State WR Jeremy Maclin Missouri RB Knowshon Moreno WR Percy Harvin Florida CB Alphonso Smith Wake Forest and RB Chris 'Beenie' Wells Ohio State among others. What do you think? There are so many options at this point.

This Mock is the gift that keeps on giving as we will do the Mock Draft again after the NFL Combine to see how things might have shaken up. Alright let's hear it. They are already on Pick #11 so let's figure this thing out...

    Michael Johnson????

Are you for real. The guy is fast, however he is light and more of a stand-up end in a 3-4 defense. He vastly underperformed his senior year and was a pretty big dissapointment. There are far better pass rushing DE’s and even better potential stand-up ends if that is what one is looking for. Looking for the next DeMarcus Ware is a futile attempt when looking at skinny guys who can’t get off blocks.

    my thoughts exactly

plus he was even a full time starter as a junior… i would be highly ecstatic and humiliated if Orakpo and/or Everette dropped to us

I have a very, very good feeling

we’re gonna wind up with a DE that’s not listed on the board…..

    Cannons... fire them.

    I also said Alphonso Smith

assuming that most of those guys outside of Wells Harvin and Orakpo are gone.

a mock like this gives me hope

for selecting in the 19th slot… there’s plenty of immediate impact guys to go around

i'm a bit iffy on Everette Brown

I had a class with the guy and so my decision process is a bit tainted, but I also saw how he made a lot of his impact plays and i question whether his spin move would truly surprise NFL tackles… Obviously if he’s there I would take him, I just don’t know that he would immediately pay dividends and that’s what we need on the d-line

    Where is the O-Line

What about Andre Smith or Michael Oher?

    Knoshawn Moreno

We need a double headed running attack. Graham and Moreno in the back field could be good. I see Caddy possibly not making it out of camp on the roster and Dunn being used as the back up. The Bucs strength is O-Line. A potent running attack will controll the clock and allow us to stick around in games. I am still on the give Luke McCown a chance to run to offense camp. He has shown anytime he has been given the opportunity that he has the capacity to be a starter.

    meh on McCown

i stand by the notion that he never took over in the four years he was here after ample opportunities (Simms, Gradkowski, Griese, Garcia etc etc) and so he never will… He is and always will be a 2nd-to-3rd stringer

I will understand if the Bucs move on from Cadillac Williams, but i would still be pretty pissed. I don’t see Raheem doing anything like that in year one. The players seem to rally around him and he’s had freakish injuries that are hard to recover from…

    trade up

in front of the Jets and take SANCHEZ!

    Is Sanches worth

trading a couple of first round picks? Heck no.

    if we trade up

it should be in next years draft Bradford/McCoy, with my preference being McCoy

    My bad....

You think Sanchez falls that far?

I don’t keep tabs on much college players outside of Florida teams.. too many and don’t have time. But what is the deal with Sanchez? I read he came from USC, but it was only recently (since Bradford and Tebow going back to school) that I really heard anything about him in the draft. Is he really pro worthy or do we just have that much of a shortage of quality QB’s?

by miracles83 on Feb 4, 2009 1:57 AM EST up reply actions

    There may be no need

for us to trade up of Sanchez considering that Rex and his defensive mind will likely draft a D player. Based on this mock draft…I would expect the Jets to take CB Malcolm Jenkins Ohio State.

by angecorrado on Feb 4, 2009 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

    .

I think we should disregard this mock draft and have our own. We can vote each night on the picks and that way we can a little bit more realistic, considering there are like 3 people actively posting on those other sites.

    Agreed.

That draft hasn’t been updated apparently either.

by JScott on Feb 3, 2009 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

    depends on free agency

Free agency is loaded on the defensive side…..we have to be aggressive….then we can go offensive side of the ball….only problem that there is, is that there isn’t any quarterbacks in the draft or free agency….I would be fine with Moreno or Harvin…if available…..but DO NOT TRADE up for anything…..not worth it….Our chance to shine is later in the draft

by twrestlinga on Feb 3, 2009 4:58 PM EST reply actions

    my thoughts exactly

    free agency will be key

    how about a trade down

….we could trade down for extra 2nd round pick and still be happy with a late 1st rounder like Wells or Harvin who will likely be around for serveral picks.

by angecorrado on Feb 4, 2009 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

IMO we have too many holes

to take another small RB (who reminds me of Caddy) or a Florida WR who’s injury prone and unpolished as a receiver. I agree we need to make a splash in free agency but I just feel like we should target a safer bet at this point.

maybe pickup Haynesworth and a first round DE/DT?
    another 1st round DB?
Pettigrew looks like he could be a franchise TE?
there are still a couple solid OTs sliding too
but again, I still think we should trade up (2 spots!) to grab Sanchez and start the rebuild NOW.

by tropbeachbum on Feb 3, 2009 11:23 PM EST reply actions

    IF Sanchez fell that far

He would be our best shot at a franchise QB this offseason, tho its pretty damn unlikely and I’d rather go for a DT or DE, but if we grabbed Haynesworth…. well it could be workable.

by ghosthippo on Feb 4, 2009 5:17 PM EST reply actions

    Trade down......

I can live with that….later first rounder and extra 2nd or third…..that might work well….there is depth in alot of positions (except QB….franchise QBs that is)…..fill alot of holes through out and add valuable depth in other spots…..but with the cap room we have….free agency free agency free agency ……In Doug We Have To Trust!!!!!!!!!

    keys to success

wether it be through the draft or free agency we need to adress the cornerback spot erybodys worried about qbs but were fine everybody needs to relax at qb. Luke McCown has proved himself everytime hes gotten in a game and has never got time to progress as a quarterback obviously with matt cassel comming in and performing at a high level and derek anderson last year (who might i mention busted this year) without having a season under there belt shows it can be done but having game experience and going through a season is normally critical devolopment stage for a qb another option is also developing josh johnson 6’3" 198 pounds (needs to bulk up a lil) ran a 4.4s in the 40 and the kid can throw drafted by us last year 5th round san diego state and now that we have someone who can work with qbs in jagodzinski instead of gruden with his handy work being that he brought up brett favre and matt ryan why cant he do the same with josh johnson aye? okay anyway back the the fact we need new corners its no surprise that ronde is getting old and seems as though hes lost a step with as many times as he got burned this year i think we need to either bring in chris mccalister who was recently dropped from the ravens and or drayton florence who mind you was a bust this year with jacksonville but who wasnt right? hes still a big name free agent. besides cornerback i obviously think we need to address the defensive line, we need a new pass rusher im gonna go ahead and make this real clear ALTHOUGH GAINES ADAMS SHOWED IMPROVMENTS THIS YEAR HES NOT OUR FUTURE!!!!! nor is kevin carter what is he now 50? we seriously need to work on the end spots and interior too the whole d line is turning to be a mess our offensive line is the total opposite there young fresh strong and an overall good unit. about our linebacker situation i think were sittin pretty perfect although within the next couple years we might wanna start lookin for brooks replacement or maybe just turning to his backup adam hayward or antoine cash. anyways taking to the offensive side of the ball ive alredy explained qb and the line even though i supported graham way before he was a starter with us when he was just playing occasional games with us in preseason hes alredy up there in age right around the 30 mark i belive and then we have dunn whos what 32 i think maybe 33 and then the injury proned “caddilac” more like pinto hes always breakin down although i did like how everybody ran this year while everyone was still healthy we need to get a fresh new start at running back similar to a saints or jaguars plan where they had the vet and then a young talent come in that was the future of the team thats getting mentored someone like a moreno. then finally WR bryant i saw as a star when we first picked up and eryone was pretty shaky on him and he was obviously our breakout wide out this year galloway is getting ancient in reciver years and needs to hang it up as much as i love the guy we need a guy that can go along side of bryant if we can resign him i like the idea of having TJ houshmanzadeh along side bryant (partially because im a giant bengals fan too) but itd be a good duo i dont think itd be a bad idea to turn to someone inside the roster either i think now that grudens gone clayton will be refined back to his breakout self from his rookie campain in 2005 and since im a guy who likes the younger athlete it wouldnt be a terrible idea to pick from the draft either but knowing our luck wed pick another dexter jackson what a waste of a second round pick right? bottom line i look for big changes from the bucs this year and big things i look for everyone to be surprised.
