Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Continues Rampage, New York Wins On Road

Defensive Coordinator Jim Bates removed from duties; Bucs to return to Tampa Two.

Monte Kiffin he wasn't, but Bates never had the manpower needed for his system to work.

Effective Monday  Night, Raheem Morris has benched another Buccaneer. This time, defensive coordinator Jim Bates has been sent up to the press box to assist Morris and analyze film. The Bucs will immediately return to the Tampa Two defense run so long under Raheem Morris' mentor Monte Kiffin.

The Bucs will now utilize the speed and quickness of their defensive linemen rather than punish them for their lack of size. It would probably take years to restock the Bucs with the players needed to implement  Bates' system properly. Even our linebackers are too small for the system, but perfect for the Tampa Two.

Star-divide

This event totally removes both offensive and defensive coordinators hired by Mark Dominik and Raheem Morris at the beginning of their reign in Tampa Bay. No word on if Bates will be retained after this season, but it is doubtful. Keeping him on is probably more a sign of respect for a well known coordinator who simply did not have the men to implement his system.

The Bucs may now be only a few players away from returning to defensive performances more accustomed to around Tampa  Bay, originator of the designed defensive scheme.

I am excited about

watching josh freeman convert on third down and then we can sustain drives and score points…..as for the the defense- i wish we had derrick brooks leadership right now

by KILLIN IT on Nov 24, 2009 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

YES!!! I am actually kind of excited about this.

I am not expecting an immediate turn around, however, I think the turn around on D will be much quicker now. Plus, it just doesn’t seem right to not run the TAMPA 2 in TAMPA! I think this could help as quick as within 2-3 weeks.

Predicatble and Necessary.

I didn’t see it coming this soon, but it was inevitable that Bates would be removed.

I don’t think Tampa 2 is necessary to win, but Bates scheme just didn’t cut it.

Nor did they in his last stop either.

You can’t have a scheme that is that player specific.

Its immediate.

However, dont expect Monte Kiffin type numbers. Lets not forget this Tampa Two system was run in the last 4 games of the year. The Tampa Two only works if you have the guys to run it. It worked because we had Lynch, Sapp, Nickerson, Brooks, Rice, Quarles, all at times perfect fits for the system. We will have to find out which of todays Bucs fit it. I think we know Ruud Is a Mike Backer for the TT. Maybe the Bucs will give him his contract now if they feel he belongs in the plan. I would expect Joe Barry to be the D coordinator next year, as he is the senior most defensive coach from the Kiffin era as far as how l ong ago he started here.

Wow...this is strange

Makes you wonder who made the decision on hiring Bates in the first place.

I blog the Carolina Panthers at www.catscratchreader.com

by Jaxon on Nov 24, 2009 9:04 AM EST reply actions

Pure speculation

This move reeks of desperation from Raheem and Dom. I was highly critical of the hiring of Bates. That being said, it was known we did not have the personnel to succeed from Day 1. To abandon ship now after weeks of suffering, seems like a waste fo time and a lack of long term focus. The ball was totally dropped on both coordinator hires. Its pretty clear who the next man in the firing line is.

dont be so sure about that.

Im telling you, the Glazers are going to give Morris and Dominik at LEAST 2 more years to t urn this around.

Like I said in another post

Once the Glazers see the amount of un-renewed season tickets at the end of this year, they’ll make a change because it’s about money, and you need money to win. Fans are calling for Raheems head, fans do get their way most of the time.

Fans are just that though.

We also happen to have a large amount of fairweather fans from other areas of the country.

by NewLogic on Nov 24, 2009 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

A change had to be made. The defensive failures certainly weren't all on Bates, but his failure to adapt put the nail in the coffin

I’m interested to see what happens with the defense in the long term. If nothing else, the process being used to evaluate and hire coordinators has to be revamped.

For anyone who has been a fan for more than a day.....

It was painful to watch as the D crumbled up against Ricky Williams with the game on the line. While I do agree that changes had to be made from last season, The Tampa Two is our bread and butter and one of the most copycated D’s in the league. What would ever posses anyone from wanting to get away from that is beyond me but I’m glad Coach Morris is finally gonna go back to what the Bucs do best. Can’t wait to see the results

Just remember one obvious thing,

a lot of teams try to run the Tampa 2, but if you dont have a Sapp, or a Brooks, or Nickerson or Lynch, it will fail.

We have a few of these pieces, but were still short. At least we only need about 4 players now instead of 8.

I'm kind of mixed on this

What does it say about your team when you’re firing/replacing/relieving both first-year coordinators by the tenth game of the season? Its a sign of panic and lacking a plan. It also shows an unwillingness to give a coordinator a chance, which won’t help lure a good one…not under this trigger-happy regime. Jim Bates was brought in here to develop his system, which takes time to accumulate the personnel…I.e., every DC who’s brought in a 3-4 system (which takes the most time to adapt to) typically gets time to bring in their hybrid players. Bates had the players in Green Bay and Miami to run his system… He didn’t in Denver and he CERTAINLY doesn’t here. Its hard to make meatloaf out of manure. If you commit to a coordinator, you have to give them a shot to at least have one or two offseasons to go after their guys in FA and the draft. I think this move is egg on the faces of Raheem and Mark.

That being said, I’ve been frustrated with Bates’ rigidity and apparent unwillingness to change up his scheme or philosophy in-game when the situations call for it. I am certainly not happy with the play of the defense like everyone else.

We're 1-9

We don’t exactly have the luxury to act like everything’s smooth in paradise. As you mentioned, he wasn’t making proper adjustments on the fly as well as doing some of the things he was saying we’d do in the preseason. Not having talent is one thing, but he still has to do his part optimally.

by NewLogic on Nov 24, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

that's true

Panic/Lacking a plan, whatever it is, point is, we’re 1-9.
We have to start making changes, because whatever we were doing, was not the answer. Might as well start moving things around and hope for results (especially on defense).

This is very off topic, but do you think Clayton should be demoted from his number 2 spot also? I think Stroughter can be a number two, but what about Stovall? I personally don’t think Clayton should be a starter. He should be behind Brian Clark…

by rjblitz02 on Nov 24, 2009 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

I'd definately like to see more of Stroughter.

But Brian Clark only seems to get things done against 3rd and 4th string defenses in garbage time.

At 1-9 and having one coordinator suddenly canned before the start of the season before he could log one regular season game...

(effectively) canning your established DC to put your inexperienced head coach at DC ALONG WITH taking on the duties of being the head coach (both of which he has no experience handling and quite frankly has not exuded confidence or leadership as head coach) reeks of mismanagement and desperation. Don’t think this won’t have an affect on the players, becaues it will. It’ll further engrain that this staff doesn’t appear to know what the hell it’s doing or have any long-term plan. Believe it or not, perception matters a heckuva lot to free agents, players, and coaches.

UNLESS Raheem approached Bates about making some changes, and Bates was insubordinate or otherwise just flatly refused to make some adjustments to his system to get through the season with the best results with this personnel, then I don’t condone the move.

by Craig T on Nov 24, 2009 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

I think the biggest mistake made was

hiring Bates in the first place (and that is not a knock on Bates, who I think is a very good coordinator when working with players who fit his scheme). It was plainly obvious what type of players Bates needed to run his system before we hired him. Why in the world would you hire a DC who’s personnel needs were so far removed from the roster you currently had to work with? It almost appears as if it was just a change for the sake of change, and Bates was a name people knew and could get excited about. It was a knee-jerk reaction to the failure of the defense down the stretch last year. Why not start with identifying what/where the breakdowns were, and then bring in a DC who runs a system that fits the majority of players you have on defense (doesn’t necessarily have to be a Tampa-2).

by FLBoy84 on Nov 24, 2009 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

Its too bad Bates couldn't adjust for the time being.

You have to be able to adapt to the players you have until you get the players you need. What concerns me now is that there is no clear direction. If we keep changing coordinators every 3 months and ping-ponging between schemes, the right players won’t be attained.

Find a coordinator, stick with him, and get the players they need.

by kurby on Nov 24, 2009 12:11 PM EST reply actions

For Offense they’ll mostly stick with Olsen for atleast another year, since he’s been working well with Freeman to setup plays thats maximize his strengths. Defense will most likely be determined how Raheem does being both the HC and DC. If the defense suddenly sparks (not a full on renewal), then our defense does have a scheme.

Either way though, we need Suh.

by kurby on Nov 24, 2009 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

i've never seen a coach make so many mistakes

switching defensive philosophies without the personnel to pull it off…
getting rid of most of your veteran leadership…
drafting a qb when the front 7 REALLY needs help…
trading 2 draft picks for an injury prone TE who is only going to get you 600-700 yards in a good year when the front seven REALLY needs help…
firing your offensive coordinator right before the regular season starts…
starting byron leftwich…
trading away gaines adams, who works good in the tampa 2, then returning back to the tampa 2 after he’s gone.did i mention the front 7 REALLY needs help?…
a head coach who can’t seem to handle whats going on now fires his D coordinator midseason and takes on that extra duty?…

by the chuck on Nov 24, 2009 12:37 PM EST reply actions

Kellen Winslow trade was fine. The man is a beast.
Leftwich made sense, team itself just didn’t go as planned.
Adams we needed to part ways with him.
And the Freeman pick we can forgive if he truly is our guy.

Everything else is set in stone. Hopefully he can make us forget about them as well.

Maybe I don't have the pewter colored glasses on like everyone else, but I don't think Freeman has been all that good.

He has made some terrible throws and been lucky on some dropped balls throw right at DBs. He isn’t protecting the football nearly good enough, and holding onto it too long when blitzes come.

2 good 4th quarters and one good drive doesn’t equal success in my book. He has tons of improvements to make and needs to show me a lot more before I anoint him a “real deal”.

by kurby on Nov 24, 2009 1:16 PM EST up reply actions

no doubt he has improvements to make, but he needs a better wideout than michael clayton….i didnt claim he was a real deal i said he can be, meaning the future….im well aware that he is a ROOKIE qb

by KILLIN IT on Nov 24, 2009 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

Yea, he has to work on security, which hopefully, should come with time.

Everything else I believe should come with time and chemistry with stable receivers. Knowing you have guys that can get open / have reliable hands / can bail you out goes a long way for any QB.

by NewLogic on Nov 24, 2009 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Kirby, has he made terrible throws for a veteran? or for a rookie?

I dont think a nyone has said he is the real deal, but looks like, or could be, …..

I can tell you from experience, Steve Young, Vinny, Doug Williams, Dilfer, none of them looked this good or with this much potential. lets give him a chance.

He has made terrible throws period.

I’m not giving up on him, just not ready to crown him with anything. I don’t believe he has even shown that he is worth all the hype yet. Not saying I don’t think he can be a great quarterback, but there are too many fans who think hes already the next Dan Marino. Lets see…

by kurby on Nov 24, 2009 10:26 PM EST up reply actions

Well... heh...

He’s a true 3-4 NT, and would fit better in Bates’ particular 4-3 scheme than in the Tampa 2. Shelving Bates obviously affects, to some degree, how the Bucs will draft.

From what I’ve seen, he seems to lack the conditioning to man that position by himself.

We were running Cover 2 a decent amount the last few weeks. Also be interested to see if this helps and how. We are still vulnerable to the run, the Cover 2 won’t change that (See Carolina game last year). I want to see how this affects Ruud, Hayes and Sabby.

cody would make 2nd and 3rd down more managable by stopping the run

also walter thurmond the 3rd (cb, oregon) was a MONSTER defensive back for oregon… they also produced jairus byrd and patrick chung, both of whom came in , started, and played great…he was 1st round talent before his injury, but will probably slip to the mid rounds now…

sabby was good at oregon state where he played more of a rover than a safety position

I'm not surprised

by anything other than that they didn’t fire him. He is staying on to help plan games? We had a plan? Plus, we have no idea on whether or not Morris will be a good defensive coordinator. He may even be worse than Bates. He only has one season of experience in coordinating a defense (K-State, where he quit after one year to return to the Bucs)

Not to mention that he quit

in the middle of his contract at Kansas State and got sued by the school for a 100 G’s. I don’t know why he thinks he can scheme better than Bates, who has been doing it for a decade (granted, usually not very well). Raheem was going to be the DC before he got Gruden’s job anyway, so lets see what he’s got. (Besides a mouth full of excuses)

he is considered very capable of playing the Three Technique that Warren Sapp made so famous around here, and he is 305, Sapps weight many years playing the system.

Totally agree on Suh. He’s perfect for the system. Having watched every Nebraska game this season, one of the most remarkable qualities is his discipline. He’s extremely good at shedding blockers in the run game and he always puts himself in good position to make a play on passes…if he can’t collapse the pocket and pressure the qb, he’s still able to spy the qb, get his hands up and knock down (or intercept, on several occasions) the pass. He’s relentless in pursuit and it’s not uncommon to see him run down skill position players.
