Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ring of Honor to get under way

Back in February I ran a poll on whether this fan base thought the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should have a Ring of Honor, 90% of the fans voted yes to the idea. Several of you have clamored to construct our own Ring of Honor… Well let’s do it.

I think we should construct it as such: The organization only spans back to 1976, so rather than picking one player every 8 years as previously suggested, let’s pick player(s) from each decade (in other words segment it to the 70’s, 80’s, and so forth). I know a couple of you worried about having a Ring of Honor of over 50 strong, with a overall team record of (196-303-1) I don’t think we’ll have that problem, though I could be wrong. I’m open to criteria for the Ring of Honor as well, but I figured we would just go on statistics and fan recognition. If you want it more sophisticated we can do that.

I wanted to preface this task with the fact that I’ve been a fan since 1996 (13 years old). Prior to that I was enamored with the Cowboys and 49ers, who wasn’t? Over the past 12 years I’ve been a huge Bucs fan. I still have nightmares of Trent Dilfer lining up behind the center to play QB, why I ask? At any rate, I’m not the end-all-be-all to Buccaneers history and I look forward to learning a lot about the past greats who played for the Bucs. With this task I’ll be relying on a lot of you older Bucs fans, as the stats don’t always paint the perfect picture. I would hate to gloss over deserving players due to them not having the best stats. This is our Ring of Honor, not a computer generated "This is who you will honor" dictatorship so hopefully you guys get involved in the process. At the very least I know people will vote…

If you would like a point of reference in terms of statistics and mainly for who even existed and played well back in the day, be sure to checkout Pro-Football-Reference.

Alright so the tires have been kicked on this thing so start brainstorming. Maybe we’ll tackle a decade a week? We’ll see how it goes and play it by ear. We’re starting with a shortened time span however, from 1976-1979… Let’s add our suggestions for the 76’-79’ Class in the comments section, try and back up your suggestion with reasons for entry. Once we have our selections I’ll throw up a poll on the site and we’ll vote those worthy into the Bucs Ring of Honor…..

BUC ROH

HEY EVERYONE, I`VE BEEN A FAN FROM DAY ONE, FOR REAL, BORN AND RAISED IN TAMPA BAY. ONE THING I LOVE AND KNOW A LITTLE ABOUT IS THE BUCCANEERS. EVEN WHEN WE STANK AND EVERYONE LOVED DALLAS OR PITTSBURGH OR MIAMI, I ROOTED FOR THE ORANGE JERSEYS EVERY SUNDAY! WE WON GAMES ONCE IN AWHILE AND BRAGGED ALL WEEK LONG! IT WAS ACTUALLY PRETTY FUN. I REMEMBER LOOKING FORWARD TO DETRIOT COMING ON SUNDAYS BECAUSE WE MIGHT WIN THOSE GAMES! LOL! BUYING TICKETS FOR 5 DOLLARS IN THE PARKING LOT AND SITTING ANYWHERE YOU WANTED ALMOST. GOOD MEMORIES. I`M GOING TO PICK MY FAVORITE BUCS ONE YEAR AT A TIME BECAUSE I WAS THERE FOR EVERY YEAR…GOOD ONES AND BAD ONES! THIS IS ALOT OF FUN FOR ME, ANYWAY MR. JSCOTT HERES MY ROH PICKS FOR 76-79. 1976 HAS TO GO TO THE FIRST PICK EVER LEE ROY SELMON. TACKLING AND HUSTLE MACHINE. SUPER PLAYER AND NICE GUY OFF THE FIELD TOO. MET HIM AT TAMPA GENERAL HOSPITAL AND SHOOK HIS HAND. I THINK THIS ONE IS AN EASY PICK FOR MOST FANS. IT GETS TRICKIER DOWN THE LINE THOUGH BECAUSE THE TEAM WASNT DOING SO WELL YA KNOW. 1977 GOTTA GO DEFENSE AGAIN. RICHARD “BATMAN” WOOD. HE STARTED LIKE OVER A 100 GAMES A MEAN HITTER AND INTERCEPTED ALOT OF PASSES TOO. WAS A BIG PART OF A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM DEFENSE IN 1979. AND THE “BATMAN” DECALS WERE REAL COOL ON HIS ELBOW PADS! MY PICK FOR 1978 IS AN EASY ONE I BELIEVE…DOUG WILLIAMS, `NUFF SAID! THIS MAN WAS REALLY FUN TO WATCH, WHAT ARM STRENGHT! 80 YARDS WITH A FLICK OF THE WRIST. SERIOSLY. RARELY EVER SACKED AND A BIG STRONG GUY TOO. SUPERBOWL MVP WITH THE REDSKINS. HE LEFT THE BUCS BECAUSE CULVERHOUSE WAS TIGHT WITH CASH AND THANK GOD HE`S BACK IN THE ORGANIZATION AGAIN! 1979 WAS A TERRIFIC YEAR AND MY 1979 PICK IS DEFENSE ONCE AGAIN..IT WAS THE YEAR WE ALWAYS WILL REMEMBER. THE DEFENSE WAS AWESOME AND NOSE TACKLE DAVID LOGAN WAS A HUGE REASON WHY! THIS GUY WAS OUR ORIGINAL “HARD-NOSE” NOSE TACKLE. BIG DAVE LOGAN PLAYED GREAT FOOTBALL FOR 7 YEARS WITH THE ORIGINAL “ORANGE CRUSH”. WHEN I PLAYED FOOTBALL WHEN I WAS A KID AND MADE A GOOD TACKLE I USED TO HOLLER OUT, “DAVID LOGAN!” SO HERE IT IS…...MY PICKS…... 1976 LEE ROY SELMON.1977 RICHARD “BATMAN” WOOD. 1978 DOUG WILLIAMS. 1979 DAVID LOGAN. THANKS FOR PUTTING THIS THING TOGETHER, CANT WAIT TO SEE HOW OUR ROH TURNS OUT. GO BUCS!
